Transforming Tradition: The Evolution of a Dining Room into ‘The Escape’

Even with a spacious area of 6500 square feet, a room that sees limited use throughout the year becomes unnecessary. At our design firm, we prioritize understanding how our clients utilize their homes before focusing on aesthetics. For one particular family, it became clear that a formal dining room was more of a bonus room than a necessity.

In our 4 Boys And A Dreamhouse Project, the main floor was carefully designed to cater to their needs. It features a large home office, a living room, a dinette, two powder rooms, a kitchen, and a room we affectionately call “The Escape.” Given that this family has four energetic young boys, they desired a designated space where adults could unwind without being too far from the action yet shielded from the noise and chaos that often accompanies children.

Their vision for The Escape was to create a cozy and alluring atmosphere, complete with a desk, a TV, and a bar. We incorporated their requirements into the design, ensuring that the room could easily be transformed back into a full dining room if needed.

One of the standout features in The Escape is the custom bar. The dark cabinets, specially crafted to their specifications, provide a striking contrast to the room’s overall neutral palette. For the waterfall counter and backsplash, we chose a stunning natural marble with a rich green vein.

Taking inspiration from the marble, we carefully selected a couch and drapery that harmonized with its color.

To add an artistic touch, the upper cabinets were skillfully made by a local metal artisan in brass mesh, while the center cabinet discreetly houses a wine fridge.
