Let’s look at the source of why you’d be in such a predicament. What’s the reason that you’re looking for change? Is your home too small, too old, not functional enough? Do you hate the neighbourhood? Why doesn’t your home currently work for your family?
Our most recently photographed project, the Laval Kitchen Extension, is a perfect example of a family who loved their neighbourhood, had enough bedrooms and space, but could not find a way to make their small and awkwardly placed kitchen work for their lifestyle. A family who enjoys entertaining and being together while one of them is cooking and the kids are playing. This family absolutely needed a great room; an open space where they can spend time together.
The challenge was that with the space that they had, the old solution was to extend their home to create the flow that they desired.
Although they came up with a solution that allowed them to stay in their home, like almost everything else in life, the decision was mainly influenced by the dollar signs. They were living in their home for 10 years. Even though they would have been able to sell it for a significant profit, to buy a bigger home in the same neighbourhood – with their list of must-haves – would not have made sense financially.
Let’s look at it from a financial perspective. The costs involved in purchasing a new home are sometimes not so black and white. The agent fees, welcome tax, moving costs all need to be taken into consideration. Not to mention that if your new home is not perfect, you might still be stuck with some kind of small renovations, painting, buying new furniture to suit the new space. That’s when renovating a home starts to sound a lot more appealing.
On the flip side, renovating might not be for you if you simply need more room than what your lot allows for, if you dislike your neighbourhood, or if the numbers make more sense to move (for example, if your home needs a lot of structural work).
Enlisting a professional is always the best way to help you come to a solution. A good designer will help you work out the pros and cons of renovating to achieve what you need from your home or assist you with all of the details in the new one. Together we can create your dream home.
Sometimes it’s as easy as booking a consultation with a specialist that will guide you in making the right decision.
