As soon as we walked into this home located in Baie d’Urfe, we knew it had great bones. Its closed layout is uncommon these days but given the square footage and connecting passages, we effortlessly flowed from one room to the next as natural light flooded the house. It felt like a custom-built home, with wood detail in-lays in the flooring, wainscotting running up the staircase, and a well-thought-out layout with lots of space to spare. We further accentuated the architecture by incorporating tons of custom built-ins throughout the office, living room, and mudroom.
Located in the suburbs of Montreal meant the property was surrounded by greenery which sparked our inspiration for the design. We incorporated several muted colour in the design of our built-ins, a deep forest green taking center stage in the kitchen and the mudroom.
Our clients would often use their side entrance which was small in proportion to the rest of the house and created a funnel as they walked in or out. Without a practical place to store coats or put on their boots, we decided to create a built-in that would double as a mud room in the hallway off the side entrance. The cabinetry is a beautiful contribution to the rest of the architecture but the best part is that this one additional solved an everyday pain point for our clients.
We intentionally kept the kitchen closed because the home already felt so formal and we wanted to continue that vibe. We did, however, completely change the layout of the kitchen to make it more functional and to optimize the storage. There’s a lot to look at in this kitchen. Between its unconventional layout, the warm wood accents, the shiplap island, and the pop of green cabinetry, every angle is a good one!
We kept it a bit farmhouse to maintain the cottage vibes by including an apron sink, a beautiful hand-crafted subway backsplash, and a honed black granite counter that will age well as this kitchen is put to use.
Part of our mandate was also to design custom cabinetry and redo two of the fireplaces. One of which was located in our client’s home office. This room is one awesome place to work! Located just off the main entrance means it’s one of the first views you get as you walk in, so we had to make it special. In lieu of green, we opted for a deep navy built-in that flanks a custom fireplace with a Carrara marble surround. We styled it using all of our favourite Hibou Home (Link website) accessories.
With this timeless design and optimal layout, our client’s young growing family and their four-legged pooch, Penny, will be enjoying their home for years to come!
