There’s something truly special about reimagining a classic Westmount home – the kind of house that tells its story through millwork, proportions, and craftsmanship. Our clients came to us wanting to preserve that timeless character while infusing it with their own love for mid-century modern design and their extensive contemporary art collection. The result is a home that balances architectural heritage with modern personality.

From the very start, our focus was on honouring the home’s original bones. The beautiful dark wood staircase railing was preserved and restored, setting the tone for how old and new would coexist throughout the house. However, to make the layout more functional for the family, we reconfigured both the main and upper floors – opening up circulation, improving flow, and connecting key spaces like the kitchen and dining area. This meant that preserving every original architectural feature wasn’t possible. Instead, we chose to replicate the essence of those details through thoughtful design, recreating the oversized baseboards, traditional paneling, and classic trim profiles so that the home retained its historic soul, even within a new footprint.
We added traditional wall wainscotting in the hall, powder room, and office to bring rhythm and depth back into the architecture, while custom marble mantles reference Westmount’s craftsmanship heritage. The natural marbles, used throughout the home, quietly elevate every space with texture and timeless beauty.

To balance this traditional framework, we brought in contemporary furnishings with clean lines and warmth, allowing the couple’s edgy art collection to take center stage. The juxtaposition creates a home that feels both curated and deeply personal.

Subtle details play a big part in how the spaces feel. We incorporated concealed doors in the kitchen (to hide the pantry) and in the hallway (to discreetly tuck away the powder room), allowing the flow to remain uninterrupted and the architectural lines to shine. These quiet design moments are often what make a home feel effortless, even when it’s anything but.

In the end, this project became exactly what its name suggests — a home where art and architecture meet. Every marble vein, brass detail, and shadow line contributes to a feeling of balance between eras. It’s a Westmount classic, reimagined through a modern lens; timeless, layered, and unapologetically personal.
