2019 INTERIOR DESIGN KITCHEN TRENDS

A mid year review of the trends we’ve seen in 2019 is due since at this point we can see which ones look like they’ll be sticking around and which have appeared and disappeared before the year is up.

Coloured cabinets are going strong

We had a glimpse of this trend in 2017 when we completed our Bellay’s Street Project featuring deep blue cabinets with brass accents. We’re so happy to share that we haven’t stopped specifying coloured cabinets since then! So for those of you saying it’s just a trend, bear in mind that good trends will last between 7-10 years which is usually around the time that most homes are due for some kind of update. Great trends exceed the 15 year mark and this very we’ll be one of them. An expert colour designer once told me that the way to avoid trendy colours is to stay away from the current trendy neutral. It used to be beige, then transitioned quickly to cool greys. We’re now in a stage that greys are evolving to warmer greys that will eventually circle back to a different version of beige. These neutral trends last about 10-15 years and to avoid dealing with that whole cycle, the key is to opt for an actual colour that you love. By decorating with colours that you love instead of focusing on the current trendy neutral, you are creating a true timeless design.

No Upper Cabinets

We’ve seen this trend pickup as of mid 2018. Upper cabinets have been slowly disappearing and custom encased hoods have been taking centre stage. The goal of omitting uppers is to open up the kitchen space aesthetically, to accentuate natural lighting and to create an enjoyable work surface. Homeowners are happily giving up the additional storage and the excessive kitchen gadgets to take advantage of this aesthetic. We’ve also been designing fully integrated wall to wall storage cabinets with integrated panelled appliances to compensate for the lack in storage lost with the upper cabinets.

Mixed Metals

Another trend that’s going strong is mixing metals. It can be tricky but when executed effectively, creates a layered depth that’s far from cookie cutter.

Oversized Lighting

Finally, one of our favourite trends, not only in the kitchen but throughout the home, is oversized lighting. Again, nothing new here, we’ve been using larger than life fixtures over the last few years but still have yet to have enough. They are sometimes bold and steal the show and other times, we opt for simplicity that take space with it’s scale. Whether over an island, a dining table, or floating over a staircase, installing oversized lighting always requires a bit of courage and the payoff has yet to disappoint.
